Program Description
This certificate is designed to meet the needs of the rapidly growing medical device industry in the nation. This program supports the unique needs of students with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Engineering and Computer Science or College of Science and Mathematics, as well as those who are in their early through mid-career in this industry. This certificate is applicable in important areas of medical device design, development, and manufacturing, along with regulatory requirements. The certificate may be completed in as few as two semesters. Students may earn the certificate as a stand alone credential or as part of a Master of Science degree offered through the Department of Biomedical, Industrial and Human Factors Engineering.
Program Admission Requirements
Admission to this certificate program requires a completed bachelor’s degree with a 2.70 or higher GPA. The certificate may be earned as part of a graduate degree program or as a stand alone certificate for a non-degree graduate student.
Program Learning Objectives
Students enrolled in this program will learn to:
- apply knowledge to select materials and design, develop and prototype implants (ABET 2)
- understand design, development and regulatory requirements in medical devices (ABET 2)
- communicate effectively in written and oral form, at a high level of knowledge (ABET 3)
Program Learning Outcomes
ABET Student Learning Outcomes
These outcomes are common to all engineering programs. Elements indicated with an asterisk (*) are considered essential outcomes for this program and must be specifically developed in every offering regardless of instructional term, instructor, delivery mode, or site. As a result of their learning experience, students successfully completing this program will have:
- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
- *an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
- *an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
- an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
- an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
- an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
- an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
