Application for Graduation

Undergraduate and Graduate Students must apply to graduate and separately register to participate in the Commencement Ceremony. Responsibility for registering in appropriate classes, scheduling, and fulfilling all university and program requirements for graduation rests with the student.

Wright State University offers separate commencement ceremonies for students graduating from either the Dayton or Lake Campus. The Dayton Campus holds two ceremonies each year. The first ceremony is Fall Commencement which is held in December. Summer and Fall graduates may participate in this ceremony. The second ceremony is Spring Commencement which is held on the last weekend of April or the first weekend of May.

Lake Campus holds one commencement ceremony a year, at the completion of the spring term.

Graduation is the receiving or conferring of an academic degree once you have fulfilled all of the requirements. Commencement is the ceremony held in the spring and fall celebrating your accomplishment.

  • You will receive an email when you are close to graduating.
  • Follow the directions included in the email or visit the Apply for Graduation page.
  • You will register for the commencement ceremony in this process.
  • You can change your response up to 30 days before the Commencement ceremony.

Since our commencement ceremonies immediately follow final exams, we are not able to certify the completion of graduation requirements prior to commencement. Therefore, Wright State does not distribute diplomas at its ceremonies.

Students graduating during the Fall and Spring Semesters will receive their diploma presentation folder during the commencement ceremony. Summer graduates will receive their diplomas in the mail. (Please note it may take 6-8 weeks to receive your diploma.) Visit the Enrollment Services website to learn more about receiving your diploma.

Undergraduate Honors Graduation Application

Students in the University Honors Program who intend to graduate with an Honors degree designation (University Honors Scholar, General Studies Honors Scholar, or Departmental Honors Scholar) must complete the Honors Graduation Application*. Students should meet with an Honors advisor the semester prior to graduation to ensure that all Honors degree designation requirements are complete or in progress.

*Note: Honors students must complete both the University Graduation Application and the Honors Graduation Application to graduate with a bachelor’s degree and an Honors degree designation. One application does not substitute for the other.

Participating in a Later Commencement Ceremony

Students who are unable to attend a commencement ceremony due to military obligation or documented emergency are eligible to attend the first commencement ceremony following the end of the obligation or emergency.  Such students must inform the Dayton Campus Registrar’s Office or the Lake Campus Dean’s Office of their intent to participate, including documentation showing cause for the exception, before the normal deadline for application for graduation/commencement participation (policy 3685.4).  Please review the Instructions for the completion of the Commencement Participation Petition.
