Program Description

The Addictions Counseling Certificate program provides professionals with the knowledge and skills to work with clients who are experiencing substance use disorders and process addictions.  Coursework explores the etiology of addiction, the historical context of substance use and abuse, evidenced base treatment and prevention strategies and professional issues in addictions practice.

Admission Requirements 

Must be a current CHEH graduate student or hold a Master’s degree in one of the following fields:  Counseling, Social Work, Psychology,  Nursing, or related human services or health field.  

Program Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the Certificate program, students will be able to:

1. Explain theories and techniques for counseling individuals, families and groups within the addiction population

2. Demonstrate an understanding of current legal and ethical issues that affect the practice of Chemical Dependency Counselors ;

3. Understand the process of a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and have familiarity with the DSM nomenclatures

4.  Identifiy and implement current assessment and intervention strategies utilized in the planning and treatment of addictions 

State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA)

This program prepares students to be eligible to apply for a professional license to practice in the state of Ohio.  Students planning to work in other states or countries should contact the relevant state licensing board in the state where you plan to work before beginning the program.  SARA does not provide reciprocity for state professional licensure requirements. Academic programs and the program graduate must meet standards set by the licensing board in a state in order for the graduate to be eligible for a license in that state.
