Program Description

The mission of African and African American Studies (AFS) is to provide students with a rigorous education that will enable them to become intelligent and productive citizens who are committed to using their learning to help advance both the world in general and the particular environment in which they live. AFS provides students the critical understanding that will especially enable them to think, speak, and write intelligently about the experiences and contributions of Black people in America. As a Program, AFS draws its teaching faculty from faculty primarily teaching in other Liberal Arts Departments.
