Program Description

This program provides a broader analysis of issues experienced by diverse populations within the US criminal justice system and proposes real-world solutions.  

Program Learning Objectives 

Students will learn to:

  • Understand the basic structure of the US Criminal Justice System.
  • Explore diverse treatment within the US criminal justice system based on one’s race, class, sex, gender, and/or disability.
  • Explore the causes of diverse treatment within the US criminal justice system based on race, class, sex, gender, or disability.  
  • Evaluate specific solutions to the problems faced by diverse groups within the criminal justice system.  

Program Learning Outcomes

Students successfully completing the course can:

  • Describe the basic structure of the US Criminal Justice System.  
  • Identify specific issues faced by diverse groups within the US criminal justice system.  
  • Explain the specific causes of disparity in the US criminal justice system for diverse groups of Americans.  
  • Formulate specific solutions to the problems faced by diverse groups in the criminal justice system.

Required Courses


Students successfully completing (with a C or better) SOC 2700 (Required) and two additional upper-level electives will earn the Diversity in CJS Microcredential—9 total credit hours.
