Toxicology Graduate Microcredential


Program Description

Toxicology is the study of the adverse effects of chemicals or physical agents on living organisms. A toxicologist is a scientist that determines the harmful effects of agents and the cellular, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms responsible for the effects. To receive a microcredential in Toxicology the learner will take eight credit hours of WSU Toxicology defined coursework (see below). The courses included in this category have been categorized based on the learning objectives and outcomes from the individual courses.

Admission Requirements

  • Graduate applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree equivalent to a degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or meet the requirements of WSU Policy 5040.

  • International students must submit official transcripts to be considered for admission to the Graduate School

  • International applicants whose native language is not English and who do not have an undergraduate or graduate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. academic institution or an overseas academic institution of high standards whose language of instruction is English must demonstrate proficiency in English.  English proficiency is demonstrated by achieving minimum scores of 20 (60/90) for the Listening, Reading and Writing portions of the TOEFL Paper Delivered test, a score of 79 on the TOEFL-IBT exam, a band score of six (6) on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or a minimum score of 57 on the Pearson Test of English (PTE) or a minimum scaled score of 170 on the Cambridge English Qualification.  Regular admission to the graduate program in English, however, requires a minimum score of 100 on the TOEFL-IBT, a score of 7.5 on the IELTS, or a score of 68 on the PTE.  Applicants for regular degree status may not submit, and graduate programs may not accept, other tests of English ability in place of these tests (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE) without prior permission from the Graduate School.  International students on the F-1 student visa program applying for non-degree status must meet either the proficiency requirements specified above or one of the following requirements:

  • a minimum score of Level B2 on the Cambridge English Qualification

  • a minimum score of 750 on the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC)

  • a minimum score of 1160 on the Global Test of English Communication (GTEC)

Program Learning Objectives 

Students enrolled in the Toxicology Graduate Microcredential will learn to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the core concepts of the science of toxicology, including hazard identification, exposure assessment, dose-response assessment, and an understanding of the mechanisms of action and effects of toxic chemicals at multiple levels of biological organization.

  • demonstrate an understanding of the role for the science of toxicology in society, including the importance of risk analysis, management, and communication. Students will be able to identify and discuss contemporary issues in toxicology.         

  • be familiar with technical aspects and experimental approaches in toxicological research, testing and risk assessment.    

  • be competent in scientific analysis and communication, including the ability to analyze relationships, draw appropriate conclusions supported by data, and articulate in writing and orally a critical perspective using evidence as support.

Program Learning Outcomes 

As a result of their learning experience, graduates of the Toxicology Graduate Microcredential can:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the core concepts of the science of toxicology, including hazard identification, exposure assessment, dose-response assessment and an understanding of the mechanisms of action and effects of toxic chemicals at multiple levels of biological organization.

  • understand the need for toxicology, data driven risk assessments, scientific analysis.

  • manage a toxicology event, understand incident command management and communication.
