Program Description
Medical French is designed for beginning level French learners in the medical and health professions who would like to increase their effectiveness in communicating with French-speaking patients or clients.
Admission Requirements
Program Learning Objectives
Students will learn how to greet patients and conduct brief conversations; conduct a doctor’s appointment (diagnostic and prescription); discuss medicines (types, obtention, and consumption), vaccines and medical exams, hospitals (work in a hospital, emergency rooms), hospitalization with heart surgery (anatomy, heart diseases); communicate with nurses (studies, teamwork); vocabulary related to medical specialties (gynecology, dermatology, geriatrics, dentistry and tropical diseases), insurance, working abroad (international organizations), and other general health subjects.
Students will learn French medical vocabulary, including human anatomy; basic grammar; the dynamics of the spoken interaction, and aspects of socio-cultural relevance.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, students can:
- Understand essential elements of professional documentation such as patients’ files, medical prescription, healthcare protocols, and technical documents to name a few
- Fill out usual professional documents, write prescriptions, fill out patients’ files, and write an educational pamphlet
- Understand the information and demands from patients, colleagues, and any other healthcare providers
- Communicate with their patients about treatments, give advice and answer any questions they may have using culturally competent strategies
- Relay public health information to the general public
- Recognize the diversity of cultures and values of French-speaking countries.
