Program Description
This Certificate provides an in-depth study of the Spanish language and Iberian and Latin American Literature, Film, Business, Written and Oral Expression, History, and Phonetics. This certificate is suitable for graduate students wishing to meet requirements to teach Spanish or College Credit Plus courses in the State of Ohio.
This certificate also will provide currently licensed Ohio teachers the means to obtain the credentials to teach College Credit Plus courses in Spanish in the State of Ohio. The courses are designed to provide rich cultural and literary content in the target language, reflecting the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world.
Admission Requirements
- The Graduate Certificate Program requires acceptance by the Graduate School as a non-degree student.
- Students must have earned at minimum a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university.
- A supplemental Department of Modern Languages application with a 1-2 page personal statement in Spanish is required.
- Applicants must pass a department administered Oral Proficiency Interview and Writing Proficiency Test with a minimal Intermediate High rating or the equivalent.
- Currently licensed Spanish teachers may bypass the above requirement.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced understanding of Spanish language and literature in Spanish on a global context;
- demonstrate writing and research skills appropriate to professional use and observe ethical practices;
- demonstrate a near-native mastery of the Spanish language, including the ability to write in Spanish at a level appropriate to professional use, and to communicate with native Spanish speakers;
- teach specific works and literary concepts at the advanced high school level, and work as language instructors at the college level.
Spanish teachers with a current Ohio license will be able to teach CollegeCreditPlus classes in the State of Ohio.
