Program Description
Addresses the forms, consequences and impact of diversity in modern society. Coursework also evaluates the social benefits of diversity and the individual, interactional, and structural factors that link it to enduring forms of social inequality.
Admission Requirements
Students who wish to obtain a certificate in Social Diversity and Inequality must fulfill the admission requirements for the College of Liberal Arts. Specifically, applicants must:
- Complete ENG 1100 or ENG 1105 with a grade of C or better,
- complete a minimum of 2 additional Liberal Arts courses in the WSU Core, and
- maintain an overall GPA of 2. 0 or higher.
All applicants meeting these requirements will be accepted.
Program Learning Objectives
Students enrolled in this certificate program will learn to:
- Utilize social science data to document patterns of social inequality across a wide variety of social identity categories.
- Demonstrate cross-cultural understanding and intercultural awareness.
- Recognize patterns of prejudice, discrimination, and features of social environments that can exacerbate or improve social inequality.
- Appreciate the impact of diverse social identities for individual well-being and life chances.
- Apply the sociological imagination to the study of diversity and social inequality.
Program Learning Outcomes
As a result of their learning experience, students who complete a Diversity and Social Inequality certificate can:
- Utilize social science data to document patterns of social inequality across a wide variety of social identity categories.
- Demonstrate cross-cultural understanding and intercultural awareness.
- Identify patterns of prejudice, discrimination, and features of social environments that can exacerbate or improve social inequality.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the impact that diverse social identities may have on individual well-being and life chances.

Program Requirements:
Students must complete 12 hours of combined coursework from categories A and B as specified below: Category A - Fundamental Categories of Diversity & Social Inequality
(Choose 9 hours) Category B - Advanced Exploration in Diversity & Social Inequality in Diversity & Social Inequality
(Choose 3 hours) Total: 12 Hours
