Program Description
The Graduate Certificate in Diversity and Social Inequality is designed to addresses the forms, consequences and impact of diversity in modern society. Coursework allows students to analyze the social benefits of diversity and the individual, interactional, and structural factors that link it to enduring forms of social inequality. Finally, capstone options allow students to participate in applied learning opportunities (research methodology, teaching pedagogy, or topical specialization), that inspire positive social engagement, innovation, and change.
Program Learning Objectives
Students enrolled in this certificate program will learn to:
- Utilize social science data to document patterns of social inequality across a wide variety of social identity categories.
- Demonstrate cross-cultural understanding and intercultural awareness.
- Recognize patterns of prejudice, discrimination, and features of social environments that can exacerbate or improve social inequality.
- Appreciate the impact of diverse social identities for individual well-being and life chances.
Program Learning Outcomes
As a result of their learning experience, students who complete a Diversity and Social Inequality certificate can:
- Critically engage with information about diverse human groups and patterns of social inequality across a wide variety of identity categories.
- Develop tools for increasing cross-cultural understanding and intercultural awareness.
- Identify micro, meso, and macro-level features of the social environment that shape and constrain social equality.
