Office Information Systems, Medical Administrative Assistant (GPS)

This plan outlines a two-year path to graduation. You are expected to satisfy all “success marker” courses, grades, and GPAs as specified. For part-time students and students needing to complete background material, this schedule represents the order in which courses should be taken. This suggested plan to two-year graduation does not replace regular advising appointments. Some course offerings may change.

Total: 18 Credit Hours


SUCCESS MARKERS: *Must pass with 30 wpm or better
** Must pass with grade of C.

Term Two


Total: 17 Credit Hours


SUCCESS MARKERS: *Must have completed OIS 1230  with a grade of C and must pass OIS 2010  with a grade of C.

Total: 19 Credit Hours


SUCCESS MARKERS: *Must have completed OIS 1070 .
**Must have completed OIS 1070  or permission of instructor. Must complete OIS 2300  with a grade of C.
***Must complete OIS 2010  with a grade of C to enroll in OIS 2020  and must pass OIS 2020  with a grade of C.

Term Four


Total: 18 Credit Hours


SUCCESS MARKERS: *Must have Sophomore status.
**Must have completed OIS 2020  with a grade of C or better. Must complete OIS 2030  with a C or better.
***Must complete OIS 2350  with a grade of C.
****Must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher and Sophomore status.

Program Description


The need for qualified office personnel in the medical field is constantly growing and expanding. The medical administrative assistant incorporates fundamental courses in records management, office management, business calculations and computer skills. It also provides comprehensive instruction in medical terminology, medical office procedures, medical coding and other medical office technologies.

Career Opportunities


The Medical Administrative Assistant Option develops skills graduates need to move into entry-level and mid-level management positions once they have gained employment experiences. Graduates of the program may obtain the following positions: medical office manager, billing supervisor, coding specialist and medical transcriptionist. Job opportunities include working in a hospital environment, private doctor’s office, or related field.

Students need no special coursework to enter the A.A.B. in Office Information Systems: Medical Administrative Assistant option. Must have a 2.0 GPA to graduate.
