Program Description

The Associate of Arts in General Studies a two-year program that includes 38 credits of general education courses in communication, mathematics, global traditions, arts/humanities, social science, and natural science (Wright State Core) that “provide you with the breadth of skills, knowledge, and understanding expected of university graduates.” The remaining 22 credits are courses that typically comprise the first two years of a Bachelor’s degree. These courses are more specialized and allow you to explore a particular area of interest in some depth.  

The Associate of Arts in General Studies is a flexible and practical program that can result in a standalone degree or an intermediate credential en route to a Bachelor’s degree.  

Students in this program should work closely with an academic advisor to outline a course of study based on course and/or program availability. 

Admission Requirements

None beyond University admission requirements. 

Program Learning Objectives

Students enrolled in the Associate of Arts in General Studies program will learn: 

  • Foundational skills needed for academic discourse, research, and documentation in an electronic environment. 
  • To find, evaluate, and use information effectively and responsibly. 
  • Foundational knowledge in a specific discipline or area of interest. 

Program Learning Outcomes

As a result of their learning experience, graduates of the Associate of Arts in General Studies program can: 

  • Demonstrate effective communication. 
  • Demonstrate information literacy. 
  • Apply foundational knowledge in a specific discipline or area of interest. 

Program Requirements:


I. Wright State Core: 38 Hours


Element 1: Communication: 6 Hours


Element 2: Mathematics: 3 Hours


Element 3: Global Traditions: 6 Hours


Element 4: Arts/Humanities: 3 Hours


Element 5: Social Sciences: 6 Hours


Element 6: Natural Sciences: 8 Hours


Additional Core Courses: 6 Hours


II. Required Courses: 22 Hours


  • General Electives

Courses that typically comprise the first two years of a Bachelor’s degree, or explore a particular area of interest in some depth.
