Emergency Management Minor

Program Description:

The Emergency Management minor program provides students with an education that develops professional emergency management specialists capable of effectively developing, implementing, and managing private and public organization’s emergency management program and executing response and recovery operations with the National Incident Management System and other federal frameworks. This program prepares students for entry-level positions within the public or private sector of the emergency management field. Students entering the program should have a strong interest in learning and implementing concepts from a variety of fields to effectively develop and manage an enterprise- or community-wide emergency management program, including, but not limited to: psychology, sociology, constitutional and administrative law, leadership studies, project management, business management, mass and interpersonal communication, natural and atmospheric sciences.

Program Learning Objectives:

Students enrolled in the Emergency Management minor will learn to:

  1. Utilize emergency management principles and federal standards to prepare for, mitigate against, respond to, and recover from a variety of natural, technological, and human-caused disasters.
  2. Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to implement the principles and concepts of the National Preparedness Goal, National Planning Frameworks, and the National Incident Management System to effectively develop and manage an emergency management program.
  3. Execute emergency management principles in a variety of planning and operational environments.
  4. Discuss how constitutional and administrative law informs and directs the emergency management profession.

Program Learning Outcomes:

As a result of their learning experience, students of the Emergency Management minor can:
