Social Science Education, BA (GPS)


This plan outlines a four-year path to graduation. You are expected to satisfy all “success marker” courses, grades, and GPAs as specified. For part-time students and students needing to complete background material, this schedule represents the order in which courses should be taken. This suggested plan to four-year graduation does not replace regular advising appointments. Some course offerings may change.

Term One


Total: 16 Credit Hours


SUCCESS MARKERS: Maintain G.P.A. of 2.75 or better; complete ENG 1100 with C or better; grade of C or better in all HST, PLS, GEO, EC and ED/EDS courses.

Term Two


Total: 16 Credit Hours


SUCCESS MARKERS: Maintain GPA of 2.75 or better; complete one language course with C or better; grade of C or better in all HST, PLS, GEO, EC, and ED/EDS courses.

Term Three


Total: 16 Credit Hours


SUCCESS MARKERS: Maintain G.P.A. of 2.75 or better; grade of C or better in all HST, PLS, GEO, EC, and ED/EDS courses.

Term Four


Total: 16 Credit Hours


SUCCESS MARKERS: Maintain G.P.A. of 2.75 or better; grade of C or better in all HST, PLS, GEO, EC, and ED/EDS courses; have completed or be completing HST 1100, HST 1200, HST 2110, HST 2120 sequence of courses.

Total: 18 Credit Hours


SUCCESS MARKERS: Maintain G.P.A. of 2.75; grade of C or better in all HST, PLS, GEO, EC and ED/EDS courses.

Total: 15 Credit Hours


SUCCESS MARKERS: Maintain G.P.A. of 2.75 or better; grade of C or better in all HST, PLS, GEO, EC and ED/EDS courses; prepare for, take, and pass Ohio Assessment for Educators subject test; be accepted into licensure program.

Program Description


Students intending to teach secondary-level social studies (Grades 7-12) in the Ohio public school system earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science education, a multi-disciplinary major including work in history, economics, political science, and geography. In addition, candidates must also, separately, be accepted into and satisfy the requirements of the Adolescence to Young Adult: Integrated Social Studies (AYA: ISS) licensure program through a sequence of courses and field placements offered through the College of Education and Human Services alongside their Social Science Education (SSE) degree. Upon completion of the academic content and professional teaching requirements, students are eligible to apply for licensure in AYA: Integrated Social Studies from the Ohio Department of Education. Students who are not accepted into the licensure program may still complete the SSE degree without licensure.


Candidates must meet with a College of Education and Human Services Licensure Advisor early in the bachelor’s degree program to learn how to apply for school placements, deadlines, admissions details, and other important information.
