Program Description:
The minor in Veterans Services provides students with knowledge and understanding of the Veterans of US Armed Forces. The program provides exposure to the sociopolitical history surrounding the creation of veterans’ services in the United State. It will explore the identity transitions that an individual experiences going between civilian and military life. The minor creates an interdisciplinary experience that exposes students to the varying facets and needs of current veterans, reservists, or guardsman. Based on psychological/physical traumas and other military-related needs, programs and service providers will be identified and explored. The skills learned in this program can benefit students that plan to work in settings such as education, business, human services, social work, health care, counseling, and many others. The minor consists of 18 credits and a grade of C or higher is required in all courses taken toward the minor.
What the Veteran Services Minor is not: It is not a service provider educational program or a military-connected program. This program does not prepare individuals to become counselors or related service providers to veterans. Rather the minor in Veteran Services will prepare students to be advocates and allies of veterans, and enable them to interact with veterans appropriately. It is specifically focused on issues related to those who have already served or are currently serving, not on individuals engaged in training to become an officer through ROTC. It may assist those who work specifically with reservists and guardsman in navigating between the two worlds.
Admission Requirements:
Students must have a minimum 2.0 GPA. NOTE: All courses in the minor must be passed with a grade of C or better.
