Program Description

The Strength and Conditioning Undergraduate Certificate program prepares students for careers in strength and conditioning, where they will work with athletes to improve fitness and athletic performance. The program incorporates advanced study of the anatomical, physiological, biomechanical, nutritional, and psychological factors underlying strength training and conditioning. Specialized coursework and field experiences provide students with the skills needed to design effective training programs to help diverse populations of athletes build strength, power, endurance, speed, and agility.

Students completing this program of study will be eligible to sit for the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam.

Program Admission Requirements

This academic program does not have admission requirements beyond regular admission to Wright State University.  Any student is eligible to declare this academic program.

Program Learning Objectives

Students enrolled in this program will learn to:

  • Apply scientific principles in the areas of biology, chemistry, and physics to problems in strength training and conditioning.
  • Conduct fitness assessments to evaluate health behaviors and risk factors.
  • Develop and implement safe and effective exercise prescriptions.
  • Work with individuals and groups to modify negative health habits and develop behaviors with positive impacts on health and wellness.
  • Demonstrate intercultural competence and apply skills ethically and responsibly with diverse groups of athletes.
  • Complete the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam.

Program Learning Outcomes

As a result of their learning experience, graduates of this program can:

  • Analyze and solve complex problems related to strength training and conditioning using interdisciplinary scientific principles from biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • Design and implement comprehensive individualized training plans incorporating fitness assessments, identification of risk factors, and promotion of health behaviors, in athletic settings.
  • Demonstrate leadership in group or one-on-one training settings aimed at promoting sustained athletic performance improvement and safety.
  • Critically evaluate ethical dilemmas in training contexts, and apply culturally responsive solutions tailored to diverse populations of athletes.
  • Achieve professional certification by passing the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) exam.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development by incorporating feedback and research to enhance performance, knowledge in the field, and evidence-based practice.
