Program Description
The Investigating Social Issues Graduate Certificate is designed to address the forms, consequences and impact of social issues in modern society. Coursework allows students to analyze contemporary social issues and the individual, interactional, and structural factors that contribute to their creation and prominence. Finally, capstone options allow students to participate in applied learning opportunities (research methodology, teaching pedagogy, or topical specialization), that inspire positive social engagement, innovation, and change.
Program Learning Objectives
Students enrolled in this certificate program will learn to:
- Identify major social issues in contemporary society and describe their impact
- Utilize social science data to document the distribution of social issues across a wide variety of social locations and categories.
- Recognize features of social environments that can exacerbate or improve social issues.
- Articulate the impact of social issues for individual well-being and life chances.
Program Learning Outcomes
As a result of their learning experience, students who complete an Investigating Social Issues Graduate certificate can:
- Identify social, interactional, and/or structural factors related to contemporary social issues.
- Critically engage with social science data to analyze and assess the prevalence and persistence of social issues across a wide variety of social locations and categories.
- Identify micro, meso, and macro-level features of the social environment that shape and constrain social issues.
