Program Description
This program provides an overview of issues associated with trauma, stress, crisis, and disasters, theories, assessment, and diagnosis of PTSD experiences, and the importance of differentiating their varying characteristics. It emphasizes knowledge and skills of different types of interventions and diagnosis from a multicultural and diverse lifespan perspective.
Program Admission Requirements:
Master's degree in any subject required.
Program Learning Objectives:
Students in this program will learn to:
- Understand the impact of crises, disasters, and other trauma-causing events on people [III.CMHC.A.9];
- Understand the operation of an emergency management system within clinical mental health agencies and in the community [III.CMHC.A.10];
- Demonstrate the ability to apply and adhere to ethical and legal standards in clinical mental health counseling [III.CMHC.B.1];
- Understand principles of crisis intervention for people during crises, disasters, and other trauma-causing events [III.CMHC.C.6];
- Know the etiology, the diagnostic process and nomenclature, treatment, referral, and prevention of mental and emotional disorders [III.CMHC.C.2];
- Apply multicultural competencies to clinical mental health counseling involving case conceptualization, diagnosis, treatment, referral, and prevention of mental and emotional disorders [III.CMHC.D.2];
- Demonstrate the ability to use procedures for assessing and managing suicide risk [III.CMHC.D.6];
- Demonstrate the ability to recognize his or her own limitations as a clinical mental health counselor and to seek supervision or refer clients when appropriate [III.CMHC.D.9];
Program Learning Outcomes:
As a result of their learning experience, students can:
- Diagnose various types of trauma
- Treat trauma and crisis clients
- Utilize a variety of intervention methods
- Assist clients, within ethical boundaries of the profession, to resolve traumatic stress.
