Psychological Research with Distinction - (Wundt Scholars) - Undergraduate Certificate

Program Description:

The Psychological Research with Distinction certificate program (1) trains students in research and statistical methods used by psychologists, (2) provides hands-on training and experience in conducting an independent research project, and (3) teaches communication skills through a written thesis and oral defense of the project, ultimately preparing students for real-world careers in scientific research. 

Admission Requirements:

  1. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on all work, including all transfer credit.
  2. 50 semester-hours completed.
  3. Successful completion of PSY 3010 and 3020 (3020 may be concurrent) or PSY 3030;
  4. The signature of a faculty member in the Department of Psychology who agrees to supervise the student's scholarly research project.
  5. Open to BA/BS Psychology majors and Psychology minors

 

NOTE: Exceptions to 3 or 4 require approval of both the thesis advisor and program director. Under some circumstances the faculty mentor may be in a different academic department but agrees to adhere to the expectations and graduation requirements of the Department of Psychology Psychological Research with Distinction (Wundt Scholars ) Certificate Program.

 

Program Learning Objectives:

Students participating in the Wundt Research Scholars will:

  1. Identify a testable hypothesis/research question
  2. Identify limitations of existing research
  3. Develop an approach for evaluating a hypothesis or research question
  4. Predict results or suggest alternative considerations that support the hypothesis
  5. Draw conclusions from analyses

 

Program Learning Outcomes:

Students completing the Wundt Research Scholars can:

  1. Apply relevant research methods to a real-world problem
  2. Detail in writing an independent research project
  3. Orally defend an independent research project

Required Coursework


Research Methods


Take (PSY 3010, PSY 3010L, PSY 3020, and PSY 3020L), or PSY 3030

If 3030 (5 cr hrs) is used to substitute both 3010 (4 credit hrs) and 3020 (4 credit hrs); these students would then need to earn another 3 cr hrs by using PSY 4050 and 4070.

5-8 credits required

All Psychology courses listed have a prerequisite of Introduction to Psychology.

PSY 3010, PSY 3020, and PSY 3030 have a prerequisite or corequisite of STT1600, STT2640, or ISE 2211

Advanced Research Methods


PSY 4020 or any PSY 3x30 methods course (examples below)

4 credits required

3x30 courses all have a corresponding prerequisite that must be taken before enrolling in the 3x30 course.

Wundt Scholar Research and Seminar


  • PSY 4070 Wundt Scholars Research (2-6 cr hrs over several semesters)
  • PSY 4050 Wundt Scholars Seminar (2-4 cr hrs)*
    • *This must be taken during the final spring semester
    • The Seminar may also be taken in the junior year- content varies accordingly.
  • Minimum of 4 credits required

Minimum 16 credit hours of coursework from the above options.
