Program Description

The Investigating Social Issues Certificate is designed to address the forms, consequences and impact of social issues in modern society. Coursework allows students to analyze contemporary social issues and the individual, interactional, and structural factors that contribute to their creation and prominence. 

Admission Requirements

The Investigating Social Issues (ISI) undergraduate certificate is a credential available to any student admitted to Wright State University with an interest in social awareness, analysis, and problem-solving.

A minimum grade of C is required for each course completed within the ISI curriculum. The courses used for certificate completion should be at the 3000-level or higher. Please review the WSU course catalog for available course options. Substitutions are allowed only with program approval.

Program Learning Objectives

Students enrolled in this certificate program will learn to:

  • Identify major social issues in contemporary society and describe their impact
  • Utilize social science data to document the distribution of social issues across a wide variety of social locations and categories.
  • Recognize features of social environments that can exacerbate or improve social issues.
  • Articulate the impact of social issues for individual well-being and life chances.

Program Learning Outcomes

As a result of their learning experience, students who complete an Investigating Social Issues certificate can:

  • Develop tools for increasing understanding and awareness of contemporary social issues.
  • Critically engage with social science data to analyze and assess the prevalence and persistence of social issues across a wide variety of social locations and categories.
  • Identify micro, meso, and macro-level features of the social environment that shape and constrain social issues.
