Program Description

The Police Academy certificate program satisfies all the requirements for basic peace officer training certification as required by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission. The Police Academy consists of over 700 hours of training and fieldwork delivered over two academic terms. Cadets who complete the Police Academy certificate program are eligible to take the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) certification examination that is required to become a certified peace officer, certified corrections officer, or certified private security officer in the State of Ohio. Police Academy course credit can be applied to the Associate of Applied Science in Police Science and/or the Bachelor of Arts in Crime and Justice Studies.

Admissions Requirements

Students must be admitted to Wright State University and:

  • Be 21 years of age at the conclusion of the Police Academy.
  • Be in good physical condition.
  • Have a valid Ohio driver’s license.
  • Cannot have any convictions for felony, drug, or crimes of violence. (Sealed or expunged felony convictions as an adult will exclude a prospective cadet from admission to the Police Academy.)
  • Pass a physical fitness and drug test.

Program Learning Objectives

Students enrolled in the Police Academy certificate program will learn to:

  1. Demonstrate physical fitness and conditioning required of basic law enforcement.
  2. Understand basic law enforcement functions in Administration, Legal, Human Relations, Civil Disorders, Traffic, Investigation and Homeland Security.
  3. Practice the psychomotor skills to perform basic law enforcement involving Firearms, Driving, Subject Control Techniques, First Aid/CPR/AED, Patrol, Civil Disorders.
  4. Prepare for the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) certification examination

Program Learning Outcomes

As a result of their learning experience, students successfully completing the Police Academy certificate program can:

  1. Demonstrate Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Program Physical Fitness Requirements.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of basic law enforcement functions.
  3. Demonstrate competency in the psychomotor skills required to perform basic law enforcement.

State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA)

This program prepares students to be eligible to apply for a professional license to practice in the state of Ohio.  Students planning to work in other states or countries should contact the relevant state licensing board in the state where you plan to work before beginning the program.  SARA does not provide reciprocity for state professional licensure requirements. Academic programs and the program graduate must meet standards set by the licensing board in a state in order for the graduate to be eligible for a license in that state.
