Program Description
A minor in Modern Languages and Cultures greatly enhances a student’s career prospects. This blended minor requires a minimum of 18 credit hours selected from courses in modern languages and cultures and/or area studies.
Incoming students can have applicable credits transcribed based on transfer credit evaluation, PLA or proficiency testing. At least 2 courses (6 credit hours) must be taken at Wright State.
Admission Requirements
The minor is open to any enrolled student who has completed
1) ARA 1010 and 1020/ CHI 1010 and 1020/ FR 1010 and 1020/ GER 1010 and 1020 / JPN 1010 and 1020 / SPN 1010 and 1020/ with a grade of C or better, or
2) the equivalent.
Program Learning Objectives
Students in this minor program will:
- develop linguistic proficiency at the intermediate level according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines in listening, speaking, reading and writing in at least one of the modern languages. Students at the Intermediate level of proficiency are able to understand, read, speak, and write on a wide variety of familiar topics, engage in appropriate social interaction, thrive in cultural situations, as well as create with the language.
- be able to study an additional modern language at the beginning or intermediate level.
- develop cultural competence and sensitivity to handle everyday situations in the target culture.
- be encouraged to study abroad to develop their linguistic and cross-cultural competencies.
Program Learning Outcomes
Students completing this minor can:
- understand, speak, read and write in a modern language at the Intermediate level as defined by the proficiency criteria of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
- understand and respect cultural differences leading to effective interaction within a target language-speaking society and in any culturally complex situation.
- build a foundation in one or more languages, cultures, and/or area studies
- develop strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

Departmental Requirements
Students take 2010 and 2020 OR 2500 in a chosen modern language (6 credit hours). Additionally, choose one option from below (12 credit hours): Option 1
Complete an additional modern language through 2020 or the equivalent Option 2
Complete an additional modern language through 1020 or the equivalent (6 credit hours) AND two culture/ area studies courses (ML/RST, 6 credit hours) Option 3
two 3000-level courses in any modern language (6 credit hours) AND two culture/ area studies courses (ML/RST, 6 credit hours) Option 4
four culture/ area studies courses (ML/RST) at the 2000-level or above (12 credit hours) |
