Modern Languages and Cultures Minor (MLC)


Program Description

A minor in Modern Languages and Cultures greatly enhances a student’s career prospects.  This blended minor requires a minimum of 18 credit hours selected from courses in modern languages and cultures and/or area studies.  Students can have applicable credits transcribed based on transfer credit evaluation, prior learning assessment (PLA), or proficiency testing.  At least two courses (six credit hours) in the minor must be taken at Wright State.

Program Admission Requirements

The minor is open to any student who has completed six credit hours of beginning level (1010/1020) in the same modern foreign language (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, etc.) with a grade of C or better. 

Program Learning Objectives

Students enrolled in this program will learn to: 

  • develop linguistic proficiency at the intermediate level according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines in listening, speaking, reading and writing in at least one of the modern languages. Students at the Intermediate level of proficiency are able to understand, read, speak, and write on a wide variety of familiar topics, engage in appropriate social interaction, thrive in cultural situations, as well as create with the language
  • be able to study an additional modern language at the beginning or intermediate level
  • develop cultural competence and sensitivity to handle everyday situations in the target culture
  • be encouraged to study abroad to develop their linguistic and cross-cultural competencies

Program Learning Outcomes

As a result of their learning experience, graduates of this program can: 

  • understand, speak, read and write in a modern language at the Intermediate level as defined by the proficiency criteria of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages
  • understand and respect cultural differences leading to effective interaction within a target language-speaking society and in any culturally complex situation
  • build a foundation in one or more languages, cultures, and/or area studies
  • develop strong analytical and critical thinking skills

Intermediate Language Requirement: 6 Credit Hours


Choose six credit hours of the same same modern foreign language:

Minor Track: 12 Credit Hours


Choose one of the following minor tracks:

Second Language Track: 12 Credit Hours


Choose 12 credit hours of an additional modern language through the 2020 level or equivalent.

French or Spanish Language and Culture Track: 12 Credit Hours


French or Spanish Language: 6 Credit Hours


Choose six credit hours of 3000-level courses in French or Spanish:

Cultural and Regional Studies: 6 Credit Hours


Choose six credit hours from the following list:

Modern Language and Culture Track: 12 Credit Hours


Choose any 12 credit hours from the list below.  The six hours of foreign language used for admission to the minor may not count here.
