Computing and Information Technology Minor (COMPIT)

Program Description

This minor is designed for students from non-technical disciplines to supplement their major with a practical set of courses focused on current topics related to information technology.  Students will acquire basic knowledge and skills in programming, networking, databases, and cyber security.  These skills will complement and enhance any student’s major program of study and can be applied to any career field.  Students will receive a conceptual foundation of various computing and information technology skills, combined with practical application of these same skills.  To earn this minor, a minimum GPA of 2.00 must be earned in the minor coursework.

Program Admission Requirements

Any student may declare this minor except for students pursuing the following majors: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Information Technology and Cybersecurity.

Program Learning Objectives

Students enrolled in this program will learn to: 

  • analyze computing problems and apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions
  • design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline
  • communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts
  • apply security principles and practices to maintain operations in the presence of risks and threats [CY]
  • use systemic approaches to select, develop, apply, integrate, and administer secure computing technologies to accomplish user goals [IT]

Program Learning Outcomes

As a result of their learning experience, graduates of this program can: 

  • advance - attain post-graduation licensure and transition through professional roles with increasing complexity, responsibility, and fulfillment
  • adapt - maintain a strong foundational knowledge base and stay current with changing technologies, tools, and paradigms in their field
