Program Description
Medical Spanish is designed for beginning-level Spanish learners in the medical and health professions who would like to increase their effectiveness in communicating with Spanish-speaking patients or clients.
Admission Requirements
- Currently admitted to Wright State University
Program Learning Objectives
Students will learn how to greet patients, conduct brief conversations, collect preliminary patient information; check into the hospital, at the pediatrician office, at the gynecologist office; conduct physical exams; talk about children’s health, family planning, dental hygiene, infant care; discuss diagnostic evaluations, transmitted diseases, and other general health subjects.
Students will learn medical vocabulary, basic grammar, the dynamics of the spoken interaction, and aspects of socio-cultural relevance.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, students can:
- Express basic healthcare information through written and spoken Spanish at the novice level in healthcare settings (writing and speaking skills)
- Recognize opinions and information through written and spoken Spanish at the novice level in healthcare settings (reading and listening skills)
- Recognize the diversity of cultures and values of Spanish-speaking countries
- Develop culturally competent strategies for communication with Spanish-speaking patients.
