Program Description
The Computer Science Essentials certificate is available to non-computer science majors who would like to gain an understanding of technology and its applications.This certificate will give students a competitive edge in the workplace and add value to any major in today’s technology driven society. Three of the four required courses may be completed by selecting appropriate courses in the core. Students will be exposed to core computer science concepts including data analysis, programming, cybersecurity, database and web development - to name a few topic areas. They will learn to apply algorithmic problem solving techniques to solve problems in their application area.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the certificate, students must have declared a major and earn a C or higher in CS 1150. Computer Science (CS), Computer Engineering (CEG) and Information Technology and Cybersecurity (BSITC) majors are excluded from earning this certificate
Program Learning Outcomes
- To understand the scope and ubiquity of technology by exploring core computer science related concepts and working with applications of each area.
- To be able to read code and understand how it works to solve a problem.
- To understand the impact of technology on a global society.
- To learn how to discuss data as a science.
- To model and manipulate data to provide analysis of trends.
