Middle Childhood Education, Language Arts and Reading (4-9) and Math (4-9) Licensure

Program Description

Upon successful completion of the of the program and passing the appropriate state mandated exams, candidates are eligible apply for an Ohio Resident Educator four year middle childhood license(s) in the concentration areas that apply to the candidate’s preparation: language arts (4-9), mathematics (4-9), science (4-9), social studies (4-9). Additionally, candidates will be licensed to teach reading, grades 4-9, with the successful completion of the program.  This is a full-time program of study currently requiring a commitment Monday through Friday.  Candidates will serve as interns in school settings throughout the school year. Therefore, this program operates on a different calendar than the university and candidates may be required to start prior to the beginning of the university’s academic term. The state of Ohio will require a criminal background check as a part of the licensure application.

Admissions Requirements

Wright State University bachelor’s degree in middle childhood education OR other bachelor’s degree from another accredited institution.

a) A cumulative undergraduate GPA: (https://policy.wright.edu/policy/5010-categories-admission)

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, with a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.7

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, with a cumulative undergraduate GPA between and including 2.6-2.69, but with a 3.0 or better for the last 60 semester hours earned toward the undergraduate degree

b) Grade of C or better required for all pre-requisite content courses and field experiences

c) Professional Dispositions (CDI) “Meets Requirements” rating for ED 2650 and ED 2750

d) No unresolved Concern Conferences.

e) Demonstration of competency on nationally normed tests in Reading, Writing and Math via the subtests on the ACT, SAT, and/or Praxis Core Academics for Educators exams. - OR - GRE scores at or above the 50th percentile.

f) Passing scores on two of the Ohio Assessment for Educators exams for Middle Childhood Education content areas: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies. 

Licensure and certification requirements vary from state to state, and we have not determined if this program meets educational requirements outside of Ohio.  If you are planning to pursue professional licensure or certification in a state other than Ohio, please contact the appropriate licensing entity in that state to seek information and guidance regarding that state’s licensure or certification requirements.

Licensure-Only Candidates - Initial License and Additional License

Candidates who wish to complete licensure or endorsement requirements at the graduate level but do not wish to pursue a graduate degree may be admitted as licensure candidates with the permission of the department in which the programs are housed. Persons pursuing a teacher licensure program are required to complete the Ohio Department of Education prescribed exams for their intended content area(s) of licensure.

Candidates who wish to be a licensure-only candidate are required to complete the same admission criteria as required for the MCE M.Ed. Program.

In addition to meeting requirements for graduation established by the Graduate School, Candidates for the Master’s degree in Education (MEd) will be required to complete the prescribed program of study listed below.
