Program Description:
The minor in English is designed for students who wish to take a coherent body of courses in British and American literature and nonwestern literatures in English. The minor combines core courses in literary history and methodology with a selection of advanced studies. Students interested in the minor should consult with the departmental advisor to determine the best courses for their needs.
Admission Requirements
Any student eligible for admission to the College of Liberal Arts is eligible for admission to the English minor. Non-native speakers of English seeking admission to any undergraduate program in English must meet one of the following minimum language proficiency requirements:
- TOEFL: 79
- IELTS: 6.5
- PEARSON PTE: 58, or
- Satisfactory completion of LEAP level 4 TOEFL substitution
Program Learning Outcomes
Students will be
- informed readers, able to formulate readings of texts based on their knowledge of literary historical contexts and of basic critical strategies
- able to develop a thesis and sustain a coherent written argument about literature using secondary sources
- able to recognize works in the Anglo-American literary tradition and other literatures written in English
- familiar with and able to use the terms of literary analysis
