Theatre Design and Technology Minor

Program Description
The Theatre Design and Technology minor is designed for students who have an interest in theatre production and want to increase their knowledge of the craft, theory, and art of design and technical theatre. Students from a variety of majors including art, education, music, and engineering may use the minor to strengthen their preparation for future careers. The curriculum balances classes in theory with hands-on experience in production work.
Admission Requirements
To declare a Theatre Design and Technology minor, schedule an interview with the Coordinator of the Theatre Design and Technology program. Students must complete TH 1020 (Introduction to Technical Theatre) with a grade of at least “C” before they can take any of the other courses in the minor, unless waived by the Design and Technology faculty.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the functions of the various designers and technicians within the broader overall production organization
- Analyze the script and design needs for any aspect of a production and create a workable design concept
- Demonstrate tangible skills in at least one area of technical theatre (e.g. scenery or costume construction, hanging and focussing lights, sound technology)
- Serve competently as a member of a production’s run crew
