Program Description

The Certificate in Aerospace Medicine is designed for physicians currently practicing in the field and pursuing American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) board certification in the sub-specialty of aerospace medicine. The curriculum is didactically demanding and focuses on the flight environment, clinical and operational aerospace medicine, and management and administration as outlined by the ABPM 2019 Examination Blueprint. The program is hosted by the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences and is closely aligned with the Master’s of Public Health degree, as it involves study of both individual and aerospace patient populations.

Courses Offered

The Certificate in Aerospace Medicine is comprised of four courses, offered sequentially as listed below, and requires three semesters (1 year) to complete.  
 
Fall Semester           ASM 7771 Fundamentals of Aerospace Medicine I
Spring Semester      ASM 7871 Space Medicine I
Summer Semester   ASM 7571 Aerospace Skills for Healthcare Providers I
Summer Semester   ASM 7370 Aerospace Toxicology
 

Admission Requirements

Applicants must possess an unrestricted medical license and a history of independent medical practice. Experience as an Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Aviation Medical Examiner or military/government flight surgeon is typical of successful candidates. Flight experience as a military or civilian pilot is also common. Approval by the ASM Certificate program faculty is required.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the historical and scientific foundations of aerospace medicine and its unique environment.

  • Discuss the essentials of medical care for aerospace crewmembers to include, screening, routine care, and longitudinal monitoring as well as emergent evaluation.

  • Discuss the essentials of care for aerospace ground crew.

  • Gain an appreciation of the location, depth, and breadth of aerospace medicine resources and research materials.

  • Produce high-quality written materials such as background papers or presentations that reflect the current or future state of aerospace medicine topics

  • Deepen individual foundations in aerospace medicine to facilitate high-quality communications with crew members, aerospace specialists, and consultants lacking a background in the field
