Program Description

The B.F.A. Design/Technology Program prepares students for careers as designers, technicians, and stage managers in the professional theatre. Students approach their studies from three viewpoints: (1) general theatre knowledge with classes in acting, dramatic literature, theatre history and theory; (2) artistic design skills, with classes in design, drawing, theatre graphics, and decor and costume history; and (3) theatre technology, with classes in technical theory, application, and craft.

During the junior and senior year students may choose to pursue a concentration in either design or technology. Design students progress through theoretical design projects to assistant design positions on faculty-designed productions and/or designing their own shows. Technology students progress through general crew positions to supervisory positions. Exceptional students may qualify for a professional theatre internship as a final senior project. Technology majors will prepare for careers as technical directors, carpenters, riggers, scenic artists, stitchers, cutters, drapers, and lighting and sound technicians.
