Program Description
The Department of Teacher Education (TED) offers the Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) in the College of Education and Human Services (CEHS) at Wright State University. The ECE program is committed to the quality and success of every teacher candidate. In accordance with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) teacher preparation standards, and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), the Ohio Learning Standards, the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) standards, and the Council of Exceptional Children (CEC) standards, the ECE program faculty are committed to ensuring high teacher candidate quality from recruitment and admission, through the progression of courses and clinical experiences, to program completion and graduation.
The ECE faculty recommend for licensure those candidates who are prepared to effectively teach all content areas grades PK-3. Because the development of candidate quality is the goal of the program, the ECE program reviews a number of academic and non-academic factors at admissions, during the program, and at completion to determine selection and progression in the program. While faculty and staff work closely with every candidate to ensure a positive experience to support the learning outcomes in our specific courses and program, a teacher candidate may be removed from the program based on performance.
The ECE program is designed for the most talented candidates and candidates must formally apply to the program and meet the academic standards defined below. In keeping with CAEP standards, it is the goal of the program to select a diverse set of candidates that meet the academic standards for and display attitudes and behaviors reflective of excellence in the teaching profession. Admission into the ECE program and cohort is not based solely on the attainment of the minimum academic requirements. Additionally, the B.S.Ed. degree program allows candidates to earn an Ohio teaching license in Early Childhood Education, grades PK-3.
Admission Requirements
To be accepted into the B.S.Ed. program, a candidate must have:
a) Completed the Program Application Form by January 15th for the Fall Semester or September 15th for the Spring Semester
b) Cumulative minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.8 or better
c) Exam scores documenting competency in reading, writing, & math via scores at the 50th or higher percentile on the subtests of the ACT, SAT, and/or Praxis Core Academics for Educators exams
d) Passing scores on the Dispositional Assessment
e) Completed the Field Placement Application
f) An academic plan for completion of all WSU Core and ECE Content courses signed by the academic advisor.
