Program Description
The Department of History offers a graduate certificate that will enable qualified secondary school History teachers to teach credit-bearing college History courses in their high schools. As mandated by the state of Ohio, the certificate requires 18 graduate credit hours within the discipline (six courses) for completion.
Admission Requirements
Secondary History teachers who wish to pursue the teaching certificate must submit to the Graduate school the following:
- Proof of current Ohio Teachers License in Secondary Education Social Studies
- Proof of current employment as a teacher
- Application for graduate certificate status
- Proof of master’s degree in any field
The Graduate School will review the applications. If the application meets the Graduate School’s minimum requirements, the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of History will review the applications for approval.

Program Requirements
Students must complete the following program of courses (three credit hours each):
- at least 3 7000-level HST courses
- no more than 3 6000-level HST courses; LA 6100 Theory may be substituted for one of these courses.
