Youth and Community Engagement Minor

Program Description: 

This program supports developing professionals from a broad range of fields in becoming able to support youth and community members in advocacy and organization to link authentic needs and professional fields. This minor can fit into or complement multiple majors depending on the electives selected. 

Students seeking the minor must successfully complete between 10 and 12 semester hours of required core courses (depending on the number of hours of urban field experience counted toward the core). Students must complete at least two approved elective courses with no more than three semester hours at the 2000 level. Other courses, including transfer courses, that address youth and families, urban issues, or urban education may be substituted for electives with the approval of an advisor. Students may have a maximum of 9 semester hours of overlap between the Youth and Community Engagement Minor and credits counted toward their major.

Current Wright State Students:

Submit Major/Minor Change Request form online in WINGS Express.

(From the “Student and Financial Aid” tab, select “Registration and Records” from the menu and then select the “Major/Minor Change Request” option)

Understanding of social, economic, political and cultural aspects of urban communities

Understanding of issues of inner-city schools and community organizations

Knowledge of experiences and challenges of family and youth 

Realization of the potential and challenges of civic engagement

Develop organizational and leadership skills to address issues facing urban youth, schools and communities

Develop skills and strategies for effective community engagement

Required Courses: 10 - 12 Credits


Student choose courses that complement their major most directly 

II. Electives: 6 - 8 Hours


Choose 6 - 8 credit hours (depending on the hours earned in the Required Core) from the following elective courses (with no more than 3 hours at the 2000 level)
