Sign Language Interpreter, BS

Program Description:

The College of Education and the Department of Human Services in the College of Education and Human Services offer a Bachelor of Science in Sign Language Interpreting (SLI), designed for students who have completed an associates in sign language interpreting.

Today’s interpreters work with a variety of deaf consumers: those who acquired American Sign Language (ASL) as their first language, those who communicate through a form of visual English, and those who use a contact variety form of English and ASL. Interpreters also work with a variety of hearing consumers: from those who are familiar with American deaf culture and the process of interpreting, to those who are communicating with a deaf person for the first time.

In this program, students will complete 60 quarter hours of professional requirements and about 44 quarter hours of general education courses beyond the associate’s degree.

Program Requirements:


I. Wright State Core: 38 Hours


Element 1: Communication: 6 Hours


Element 2: Mathematics: 3 Hours


Element 3: Global Traditions: 6 Hours


Element 4: Arts and Humanities: 3 Hours


Element 5: Social Sciences: 6 Hours


Element 6: Natural Sciences: 8 Credits


Additional Core Courses: 6 Hours


IV. Transfer Credits: 50 Hours


  • All students must have an Associate degree in Sign Language Interpreting for the Deaf.

Total: 128 Hours
